CMPT 408 ASSIGN#1
The tools I used were search engines
such as Google and Yahoo, and used the first and last names of the people I was searching for. For myself, I found many sites
with my track results or anything to do with track over the years along with some photos. Also, I found news about me being
in high school math contests and my placing in each, and surprisingly I found my site that I use to host my track game. As
for Wojtek Quibell, I was only able to find that he once played Adult Roller Hockey in the West Coast League, and that he
had competed in the ACM Programming contest on team U of S Baby Seal Club. Finally, I found tons of information on Sir Frederick
Banting, the inventor of insulin.
From the gathered results, I do
not believe that my privacy or any of the people I looked up were violated. Personally for me, I compete in front of many
people that already see me, so having my pictures on the internet does not have me worried. For me to feel that my privacy
has been breached would be to have a random stranger posting up facts about my life that is outside the track and university
world. Combined with photos taken secretly, I would take this as a form of stalking and be very concerned about that individual.
Other than that, I accept that the information I have found about myself on the internet is available to anyone. As for Wojtek,
there was very minimal data on him so his privacy is very much protected. For Sir Banting, all the information on the internet
would be the same as walking into a library to get a biography. He is already deceased, so everything that anyone wants to
know about him is very much available.
The results from the tools I used
are posted below. From the tools I have used, I found I was successful in finding what I wanted to know and I believe
it is very easy to find information about anyone on the web with tools such as Google, the only problem is that the information
has to be posted on the internet in the first place. Now, even though this is posted on the internet as well, it is not adding
anything new, except putting all this information into a nice convenient location. The tools are already available, so if
the information is out there as well, someone out there will have access to that information. It is up to each individual
to allow which information they want available, and to take action when certain information is on the internet without the
individual's consent.
Now enjoy the collection of
information mainly about myself
